Common name(s): White Oak, with at least 10 commercially harvested members in this group
CHARACTERISTICS
The contrast between gritty early wood and smooth late wood is striking. Typically, early wood containers are blocked with a material known as tyloses. The colour of heartwood ranges from light brown to light grey to medium brown. When the wood is quarter cut, large rays produce a prominent flake appearance across the grain. Rift cutting reduces the appearance of flaking.
